We are encouraging Aussies to celebrate Gone Fishing Day on Sunday, October 19.

Gone Fishing Day is all about celebrating the joys of fishing and the numerous benefits it brings. It’s also a chance to share our love for Australia’s stunning and pristine environments. Whether you’re an avid angler or just appreciate the beauty of our natural landscapes, this day is dedicated to honouring both the pastime we love and the incredible outdoors we cherish.

The theme for 2025 is Fishing for Community, encouraging everyone to connect with local fishing clubs, participate in fishing competitions or community fishing days, and discover the community and social benefits fishing has. Recreational fishing fosters strong social ties by bringing families, friends, and diverse groups together, enabling shared experiences, intergenerational knowledge transfer and cultural exchange.

So seize the day on Sunday, October 19, and gather with your family or friends to get outdoors and experience the wonder of fishing firsthand!

Good for the Body and Mind

National survey results indicate that fishing has a positive impact on certain aspects of our lives that are important to our wellbeing. It can help reduce stress and anxiety while promoting a sense of mindfulness and balance, meaning that fishers have on average higher levels of wellbeing. The three pathways that are supporting recreational fishers wellbeing are social connection, relaxation and restoration, and connections to nature.

For Gone Fishing Day this year, we hope that Australians will take the opportunity to come together and celebrate our shared love of fishing and recognise the many benefits of this timeless tradition that enriches our lives.
